Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the current year's (a) male and (b) female school leavers in (i) the district of Kirklees, (ii) the town of Huddersfield and (iii) the parliamentary constituency of Huddersfield are currently (x) in employment and (y) on youth training scheme courses.

Of those 16-year-old 1983 school-leavers in the Kirklees district whose whereabouts were known to the careers service on 21 November, and who had not entered further or higher education, 34 per cent. of males and 32 per cent. of females had found employment and 49 per cent. of males and 44 per cent. of females had entered the youth training scheme. In the twon of Huddersfield, including outlying areas, the corresponding figures were 30 per cent., 22 per cent., 55 per cent. and 56 per cent. respectively. Figures for the parliamentary constituency of Huddersfield are not available.
