§ Mr. Nicholas Wintertonasked the Secretary of State for Transport how much was spent on new road projects and on road maintenance for the latest six-month period for which figures are available.
§ Mrs. Chalker[pursuant to her reply, 18 November 1983, c. 584]: For English motorways and trunk roads £254 million was spent on new construction and £105 million on maintenance in the first six months of 1983–84. Six-monthly figures are not available for local authority roads. The latest period for which local road figures are available is for the year 1982–83 when total estimated expenditure on English roads was £1,986 million, including £935 million on new construction and improvement. These figures cover motorways, trunk roads and local authority roads. I am not responsible for road expenditure in other parts of the United Kingdom.
