asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how may people are presently being held in prisons in Northern Ireland; and how this compares with the figures in each year since 1966.

Mr. Scott

On 6 November, a total of 2,221 persons were being held in Northern Ireland prisons, of whom 413 were on remand or awaiting trial and 1,808 under sentence.

The average daily prison population from 1966 to 1982 was as follows:
