HC Deb 17 November 1983 vol 48 c551W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what was the original estimated cost for the building of Maghaberry prison when the contract was put out to tender; what is the present estimated cost for the building; and how many inmates it will house when it is completed;

(2) what was the original estimated cost for the building of Maghaberry prison; and when it is now expected that the prison will be completed;

(3) what has caused the delay in the opening of the new Maghaberry prison.

Mr. Scott

The original estimated cost for the building of the male and female prisons at Maghaberry was £32 million at current prices. The main building programme has now been completed at a cost of just over £30 million, but further works remains to be done. There has been no undue delay in the work involved in this complex project. The prisons are expected to be open in late 1984 or early 1985. The male prison will have accommodation for some 450 prisoners and the female prison will hold 56.
