Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated annual cost of travel undertaken by civil servants employed by his Department (a) within the United Kingdom and (b) overseas.

Dr. Boyson

The cost of travel on official business by members of the Department in 1982–83 was(a) £18.6 million for travel within the United Kingdom. (b) £0.4 million for travel overseas.

These figures include payments of subsistence and of other expenses incurred while travelling.
