HC Deb 04 November 1983 vol 47 cc488-95W
Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors, nurses, ancillary staff and administration staff were in post in each district health authority on 9 June 1983; and what is his estimate of the numbers of such staff that will be in post on 9 December 1983.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Comprehensive manpower data are collected at 30 September each year. In addition, since December 1982, a quarterly count as been made of non-medical manpower in the NHS. The table gives the whole-time equivalent number of nurses and midwives, administrative and clerical staff, and ancillary staff, empllyed by each district health authority at 30 June 1983, which is the closest available date to that requested. Medical and dental figures at 30 June 1983 are not available. All figures are expressed as whole time equivalents.

Manpower targets for total staff numbers but not divided into special staff groups for March 1984 have been set for each regional health authority. The distribution of the target across health authorities and staff groups is a matter for local decision, depending on local circumstances and priorities. The numbers of staff in any particular staff group or district who will be employed on 9 December 1983 are therefore not available or predictable centrally.
