HC Deb 01 November 1983 vol 47 cc323-4W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many applications for the registration of a company name have been referred by the Registrar of Companies to British Telecommunications for either comments upon the name or non-objection to the name; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I understand that the views of British Telecom have been sought by the Registrar of Companies in respect of three applications for the registration of company names and that, in two of those cases, no objection was received. In the third case, the applicant decided not to proceed with the registration.

The use of the word "British" is not normally allowed in company names unless the company to be registered is pre-eminent in its field. Accordingly, another applicant was invited to obtain the views of British Telecom in respect of an application to register a PLC with a very similar name.
