Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will provide an analysis under appropriate headings of the £1.7 billion of aid provided to the north east by the Government referred to on 31 March, Official Report, c. 487.

Mr. MacGregor

The figure was made up of industrial and other assistance to the northern region under national and regional schemes during the period May 1979 to March 1983 amounting to some £705 million, and public expenditure in the region on infrastructure provision directly relating to industrial development estimated at £1,000 million.
