§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will give details of any representations which Her Majesty's Government have made to the Governments of Iran and Iraq regarding the continuing severe loss of life in the war between those countries; and if there have been any occasions when the United Kingdom, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has requested a meeting of the Security Council to seek a resolution of this conflict.
§ Mr. HurdWe want to see an early end to the war and to avoid further loss of life, injury and material destruction. We have made this clear to both sides. The Security Council has met three times to discuss the war at the request of countries other than the United Kingdom. We have been and still are active at the United Nations in trying to find ways of achieving a cease-fire and a realistic settlement.
§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will list the United Nations Security Council resolutions currently in place which call for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Iran and Iraq; and what action Her Majesty's Government, as a permanent member of the Security Council, are taking to bring about the implementation of any existing resolutions or the passage of any new one.
§ Mr. HurdThe United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 479 in 1980 and Resolutions 514 and 522 in 1982 on the war between Iran and Iraq. The United Kingdom voted in favour of all three. Both parties should in our view be willing to set aside their real grievances in the interests of reaching a negotiated settlement as soon as possible.
