HC Deb 12 May 1983 vol 42 cc487-8W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will estimate the number of jobs lost through redundancies and closures in the Huddersfield travel-to-work area since 1979; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many job losses through redundancies and closures have been notified to his Department for the Huddersfield travel-to-work area since May 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

A total of 11,731 redundancies, involving 10 or more employees, were reported to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the Huddersfield travel-to-work area between 1 January 1979 and 31 March 1983 (these statistics include provisional figures for March 1983). Of these, 2,243 were due to closures. The equivalent figures since May 1979 are 11,514 and 2,229, respectively. Estimates of redundancies and closures not reported to the MSC are not available.
