HL Deb 11 May 1983 vol 442 cc546-7WA
Lord Wakefield of Kendal

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) whether they will confirm that apartheid in sport no longer exists in South Africa; and
  2. (b) if so, whether they will encourage the visits of sporting teams to that country so that the members of those teams can see for themselves the position in South Africa.

Lord Skelmersdale

No. The evidence available to the Government indicates that apartheid continues to affect the organisation and playing of sport in South Africa. As I have already said, the Government will continue to discourage sporting contacts in accordance with the 1977 Commonwealth Statement on Apartheid in Sport.
