HL Deb 04 May 1983 vol 442 c178WA
Lord Strabolgi

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many works of art comprise the Chantrey Bequest, how many of these are on view in the public rooms of the Tate Gallery, how many are in the Tate's reserve collection and how many are on loan.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (The Earl of Avon)

The Chantrey Bequest comprises about 700 paintings and sculptures, of which about 400 are housed with the Tate Gallery and the remainder are at the Royal Academy.

Of the 400 with the Tate, 17 are at present on public view there and 32 are on loan elsewhere. A major exhibition of Chantrey items is being organised at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, which will enable more of the Bequest to be on public view later this year.
