HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 cc85-6W
18. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, pursuant to his reply of 12 April, Official Report, c. 676, he will make a statement on his plans to improve the availability of the teaching of Spanish in Scottish schools and to combat shortages of teachers of Spanish.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

My right hon. Friend announced that new syllabuses in Spanish at credit and general level would be introduced in phase 3 of the Munn/ Dunning implementation programme. Decisions on the appropriate numbers of teachers in individual subjects will be a matter for education authorities to determine; I am not aware of any general shortage of teachers of Spanish.
