HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c72W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Prime Minister if she will set up a study on the advantages and disadvantages of a national compensation fund financed initially by the Treasury, to cover death, injury and some types of damage; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

No. Substantial provision already exists in the social security system for people who are widowed or disabled, and there are also preferential schemes which compensate for death or injury due to service in the armed forces, accidents at work or criminal assault. I am not persuaded that the establishment of a new fund would be a justifiable use of scarce resources.
