HC Deb 04 May 1983 vol 42 c100W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the Government's policy on the fair wages resolution in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Adam Butler

On 16 December 1982 the House resolved that "The Resolution of this House of 14 October 1946 relating to Fair Wages clauses in Government contracts be rescinded as from 21 September 1983". After that date, Northern Ireland Government Departments will no longer require the incorporation in contracts they make of clauses reflecting the terms of that resolution, or the resolution of the former Northern Ireland House of Commons of 11 February 1947. No steps have been taken to rescind the latter resolution because, like all resolutions of the Northern Ireland Parliament, it automatically lapsed with the abolition of that Parliament in 1973.
