WORMWOOD SCRUBS: PRISONERS AND STAFF

asked Her Majesty's Government:

1. (i) How many prisoners there were in Wormwood Scrubs in January of 1963, 1973 and 1983;
2. (ii) how many prison staff, broken down into
1. (a) members of the prison service and
2. (b) others

were employed there at the same dates.

The number of prisoners in Wormwood Scrubs on 31st January of each year referred to was:

• 1963–1,400 (including 350 borstal trainees)
• 1973–1,771 (including 375 borstal trainees)
• 1983–1,069 ('A' Hall is closed for refurbishing)

On 31st January 1983 there were 438 staff in the prison officer class in post at Wormwood Scrubs, and 152 other staff. Staffing figures for 1963 and 1973 are not available.
