HC Deb 31 March 1983 vol 40 cc251-2W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much is paid annually in value added tax by charities supplying social services to local authorities.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

I regret that the amount of VAT paid by charities supplying social services to local authorities is not ascertainable.

Most charities are not registered for VAT. Those that are registered, and which supply such services, are classified for VAT purposes with some non-charities in a category described as welfare and charitable services; and supplies to local authorities by this category of traders is not separately identifiable.
