§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis as to the practice of the Metropolitan police in deciding whether to take action in respect of vehicles parking on pavements; and whether particular categories of circumstances are taken into account in deciding on the action to be taken.
§ Mr. MayhewWe understand from the Commissioner that where an officer considers that a vehicle parked on the footway may be committing an offence it is a matter for his discretion as to what action to take to deal with it. In general, particular attention is paid to parking by heavy commercial vehicles and any vehicle causing an obstruction. The hon. Member will be aware that not every instance of footway parking amounts to an offence.
