§ Mr. Craigenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in the light of changes in the role and scope of building societies recently proposed by the Building Societies Association, Her Majesty's Government will establish an independent inquiry into the law relating to building societies to ensure a wide expression of views before making any proposals to change current legislation.
§ Mr. Bruce-Gardyne[pursuant to his reply, 23 March 1983, c. 421]: I do not think a further independent inquiry is called for but I can assure the hon. Gentleman that Her Majesty's Government will ensure that a wide canvass of views from interested parties and the general public will be invited in advance of any future legislation.
