§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give the reasons why he will not take the action necessary to ensure that if and when police officers are found guilty of illegalities, or of breaking their rules and regulations during their official duties where complaint is made and the complainant is awarded damages and compensation, such payments should be paid out of the incomes and savings of the police officers concerned and not from public funds.
§ Mr. MayhewWe are not aware of any evidence that justifies altering in the way proposed the arrangements laid down in section 48 of the Police Act 1964.
