§ 34. Sir David Priceasked the Minister for Trade what were the gross and net overseas earnings of the British merchant navy in 1982; and what percentages were in the cross-trades.
§ Mr. SproatEarnings statistics cover vessels owned and chartered from abroad by United Kingdom resident shipping companies. In 1982 gross overseas earnings are estimated at £2,824 million and net earnings at £737 million. The proportion attributable to the cross trades is only available for 1982 for dry cargo vessels; it was 46 per cent. of dry cargo gross earnings, which in turn account for 52 per cent. of total gross earnings.
Note: Gross overseas earnings cover freight revenue from exports and cross trades, charter receipts and passenger revenue from abroad; net earnings are after deduction of charter payments and disbursements abroad.
