§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will express proposed Government expenditure for 1983 as (a) an amount per person in the United Kingdom and (b) an amount per taxpayer.
§ Mr. BrittanCentral Government expenditure in 1983–84, as shown in table 5.2 of the Financial Statement and Budget Report, is estimated to amount to £123,600 million. This is equivalent to £2,200 per person in the United Kingdom. Most people pay some form of tax; it is estimated that 24.9 million people—counting married couples as two taxpayers—pay income tax.
