§ Mr. Canavanasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why no action was taken following the investigation by the independent commission against corruption into alleged corruption and fraud relating to the purchase of equipment at the Prince Philip dental hospital, Hong Kong; and why ․700,000 is to be paid from public funds to remedy defects in some of the equipment.
§ Mr. RifkindIt would be inappropriate for me to make statements about the facts of individual investigations by the independent commission against corruption.
Some defects have been discovered in the dental equipment installed at the hospital. It is in the public interest that repair work be put in hand as soon as possible to avoid potential hazard to users and disruption of the teaching activities.
The Hong Kong Government reserve their rights to seek any compensation to which they may be entitld and are reviewing their position.
