asked the Minister for Trade if the arrangement reached between the European Community and Japanese representatives on voluntary restraint on sales of Japanese video tape recorders is expected to have an adverse effect on the balance of payments through greatly increased consumer prices.

Though the prices of Japanese video tape recorders exported to the Community are expected to rise, the level of exports will be restrained voluntarily thus offering scope for import substitution by United Kingdom manufacturers. No reliable estimate can yet be made of the overall effect on the balance of payments.
