HC Deb 11 March 1983 vol 38 cc509-10W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Attorney-General whether Her Majesty's Government will cause an investigation to be made to ascertain how and why Mr. Tom Duffey, of Jessamine Road, Hanwell, was kept waiting for over two and a half years for trial on a £40 theft charge of which he was acquitted, and in view of the severe damage he and his family suffered including loss of jobs, costs of return to Great Britain and postponement of his marriage, whether compensation will be paid for his pain, suffering and financial losses.

The Solicitor-General

The principal reason for the abnormal delay in this case was that first Mr. Duffey's co-defendant, and then Mr. Duffey himself, failed to surrender to bail. No claim for compensation has been made.
