HC Deb 11 March 1983 vol 38 c520W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the average amount of capital transfer tax paid from the estates of farmers on the death of the farmer.

Mr. Ridley

Information is only available on estates for which probate has been obtained. The latest estimates for farmers relate to deaths in 1979 when there were some 6,000 estates of persons owning farmland or with an interest in a farming business or farming partnership. Two thirds of these paid no capital transfer tax; the remaining 2,000 paid an average of about £30,000 tax on the whole of their estate.
