HL Deb 10 March 1983 vol 440 c419WA
Lord Todd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the savings attributable to the closure of the Princes Risborough Laboratory after deducting the costs of transfer to Garston.

Lord Skelmersdale

The closure of the Princes Risborough Laboratory and the transfer of its functions and staff to Garston has been estimated to cost a total of £4.4 million, covering design and provision of new facilities, relocation of equipment and staff and an allowance for lost research time. The savings estimated are £1.5 million related to the sale of the site and £350,000 per year in maintenance and running costs and support staff costs. Discounting these figures at 5 per cent. over 60 years gives a net saving of £2.9 million.
