HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 cc492-3W
Mr. David Watkins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what changes there were in industrial rateable values in each county district of county Durham in the financial years 1979–80, 1930–81 and 1981–82.

Mr. Wakeham

The information requested is listed as follows:

the answer referred to, net domestic fixed capital formation is usually expressed as a percentage of net rather than gross national product—capital consumptio for fixed assets having thereby been removed from both numerator and denominator. Capital consumption for fixed assets of all finds accounted for about 7 per cent. of gross national product in 1948—manufacturing assets 1.5 per cent.—and this proportion had risen to over 12 per cent. in 1981—assets owned by manufacturing industry 2.5 per cent.

* These estimates relate only to direct investment by manufacturing industry. Assets acquired by manufacturers on financial lease are classified, on the basis of ownership, as investment by the financial services industry. GDFCF on these assets was less than 0.2 per cent. of GNP in 1975, but about 0.4 per cent. in 1981

‡ GNP at market prices has been used as the denominator for investment percentages, and GNP at factor cost has been used for the calculation relating to retained profits of industrial and commercial companies.
║ Compensating adjustments were made to the capital formation figures for 1968 and 1969 to remove the effects of a change in the rate of investment grants.
