HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 c487W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer to the right hon. Member for Western Isles of 2 March, Official Report, c. 155, what were the reasons for (a) the increase in the freehold land held by his Department in the Strathclyde region and the Western Isles between April 1981 and April 1982 and (b) the increase in leasehold land held by his Department in Grampian, Highland, Strathclyde, Tayside and Shetland regions, respectively, between April 1981 and April 1982.

Mr. Wiggin

The increase in the freehold land held by the Ministry of Defence between 1 April 1981 and 1 April 1982 is due to the planned extension of Coulport in respect of the Trident facilities; the extension of the Garelochhead Army training area, the transfer of the former Department of Energy oil fuel depot, Garelochhead and the siting of air defence radar at South Clettraval, North Uist. The increase in the Department's leasehold land is mainly due to the siting of RAF V/UHF transmitter and receiver equipment at RAF Lossiemouth; the need for additional facilities at Prestwick airport and Perth aerodrome; the siting of masts and equipment at the RN experiments station, Esh-Ness, Shetland. there have also been a number of miscellaneous acquisitions and disposals.
