HC Deb 10 March 1983 vol 38 c490W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will express the estimate of the then level of the black economy given by Sir William Pile, GCB, on the General Sub-Committee of the Expenditure Committee on 26 March 1979 as 7.5 per cent. of gross domestic product, in current prices; and what, in cash terms, is 7.5 per cent. of gross domestic product for 1982–83.

Mr. Ridley

7.5 per cent. of the expenditure measure of GDP—at factor cost—in 1979 was £12.6 billion at 1979 prices. Figures of GDP are not yet available beyond the third quarter of 1982. 7.5 per cent. of the current price estimate for the year ending in that quarter is £16.8 billion.
