HC Deb 09 March 1983 vol 38 c430W
25. Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's diplomatic representation in Nicaragua; and if any changes are proposed.

Mr. Onslow

Her Majesty's ambassador at San Jose in Costa Rica is accredited to Nicaragua. During their inspection of San Jose in July 1983 the diplomatic service inspectors will examine current arrangements and possible alternatives. Their recommendation will then be considered in the usual way in the light of available resources and commitments elsewhere.

36. Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has received any representations to appoint an ambassador to Nicaragua; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Onslow

The Select Committee on Foreign Affairs recommended in its fifth report (HC 47) that we should consider reopening the embassy in Managua. We have received similar representations from the parliamentary group, led by the hon. Member, which visited central America in December 1982 and from a number of Members of Parliament and the public. I refer the hon. Member also to my reply today to the hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton (Mr. Marks).
