asked the Attorney-General, pursuant to the reply of 1 March, Official Report, c. 66, if he will list the recommendations made by the working party under Mr. Justice Cantley which have been implemented, indicating when they were implemented.

The Solicitor-General

The recommendation of the working party chaired by Mr. Justice Cantley, which have been implemented, are set out in the following table. Recommendations Nos. 1, 2, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 entailed no change and No. 17 is for action by persons or bodies other than the Government. The remaining recommendations—Nos. 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13—remain under consideration.

3. In personal injuries cases the summons for directions should be replaced by automatic directions without summons and without order. 11 August 1980
6. The practice directions governing the setting down of actions for trial in the Queen's bench division in London need to be rewritten. 31 July 1981
15. The rules relating to interim payment of damages should be amended to permit an interim payment, even in cases of contributory negligence, provided the plaintiff is likely to recover substantial damages. 11 August 1980
18. A new rule, along the lines of Rules of Supreme Court Order 16, rule 10, should permit a defendant to make a formal offer on liability after separate trial of that issue has been ordered. 11 August 1980
