§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the 7.5 per cent. increase during January in the cost of fire damage 400W compared with January 1982, he will institute a publicity campaign appealing for more care and protection to prevent fires in homes, offices and industry.
§ Mr. MellorThe Home Office already undertakes a wide-ranging programme of publicity measures aimed at improving public awareness of the danger of fire and of action to be taken in the event of fire breaking out. Fire prevention publicity activities are also undertaken by local fire brigades and by a number of other bodies, notably the Fire Protection Association, concerned with life safety and the protection of industrial and commercial property from fire. These measures are kept under regular review in the light of trends in fire statistics and other factors, and we are not persuaded of the need for additional publicity.
