§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will give the average price of petrol per gallon in the United Kingdom in June for each of the past 10 years and (a) the total of tax per gallon for each year, (b) to what extent the tax has been inflation related and (c) how the price increase including tax compare with increases in the retail price index.
§ Mr. GrayThe following table sets out estimates of typical pump prices for four-star petrol in mid-June of each year from 1973 to 1982, the tax included in the price, the annual percentage changes in the pump price and comparable changes in the general index of retail prices (all items). From 1977 the estimated prices are based on information provided by oil companies. Matters of taxation policy are for my learned and right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
