HC Deb 04 March 1983 vol 38 c260W
Mr. Mark Carlisle

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking to encourage the dual use of sports facilities in schools by both pupils and other people living in the neighbourhood.

Sir Keith Joseph

Consistent encouragement has been given for the community use of maintained school premises, including sports facilities; and I hope that local authorities will continue to promote such use so far as practicable within the resources available to them. In December 1982 the Department published a revised version of Building Bulletin 28, "Playing Fields and Hard Surface Areas", a copy of which is in the Library, containing a chapter on shared use.

I am preparing to repeat in a modified form the survey of shared and extended use of schools carried out in 1978–79, covering sports among other facilities, the findings of which were summarised in the Department's Statistical Bulletin No. 1 of 1982, a copy of which also is in the Library.
