§ Mrs. ChalkerIn 1981–82, £192.9 million was spent on new construction and improvement of motorways, including land acquisition. A further £85.;7 million was spent on preparation, supervision, small improvements,262W lighting, and miscellaneous items on both motorways and other trunk roads: separate figures for motorways are not readily available.
The sum of £179.4 million was spent on motorway and trunk road maintenance, including lighting. Provisional returns indicate that English local authorities spent £792.5 million on road maintenance in the same period.
