asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the total amount spent on (a) the construction of new motorways and (b) the maintenance of all roads in the last year for which figures are available.

In 1981–82, £192.9 million was spent on new construction and improvement of motorways, including land acquisition. A further £85.;7 million was spent on preparation, supervision, small improvements, lighting, and miscellaneous items on both motorways and other trunk roads: separate figures for motorways are not readily available.

The sum of £179.4 million was spent on motorway and trunk road maintenance, including lighting. Provisional returns indicate that English local authorities spent £792.5 million on road maintenance in the same period.
