§ Mr. Murphyasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will take steps to strengthen law and order by increasing the penalties available to the courts for criminal offences.
§ Mr. MellorThe Government intend to ensure that the courts continue to have adequate powers to deal with offenders. Extensive powers are already available to them, and for the serious offences of violence which are of most concern the maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
