HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc654-5W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether, in view of the recent reports of massacres by Zimbabwean Government troops in Matabeleland, Her Majesty's Government will review their economic aid to the Zimbabwean Government.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

Our impression is that the situation in Matabeleland has improved considerably in recent months. We have, nevertheless, heard of these reports, and are seeking to establish the facts. The purpose of our development assistance to Zimbabwe is to foster the emergence of a stable, prosperous and multiracial society. This is in the interests of all the people of Zimbabwe.
