HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc680-1W
Mr. Steen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which European Community countries have zoned wine-growing areas as being of an experimental nature; and what effect this has on the duty payable.

Mrs. Fenner

Information on experimental wine-growing areas in the European Community is not available, but they have no effect on the duties payable on wine in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Anthony Steen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the subsidy given by the intervention board per litre of grape must imported into the United Kingdom from European Community countries; and what was the total cost to public funds over the last three years.

Mrs. Fenner

The European Community provides aids to facilitate the use of concentrated grape must from certain areas of the European Community in British wine and home wine kits, worth 0.15 ecu/kg (9p/kg) and 0.26 ecu/kg (16p/kg), respectively.

The amount of these aids paid in the United Kingdom since they were introduced was £52,000 in 1980–81 and £179,000 in 1981–82.
