Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to the charges made by water companies and water authorities for the provision of water metering equipment, split between domestic and commercial users, including pre-installation inspection, installation and post-installation survey, showing any changes since 1981; and how these charges vary between the bodies concerned.

Mr. Waldegrave

Information in the form requested is not held centrally. For domestic consumers, the cost of a pre-installation survey where a charge is made, ranges from £10 to £16. Installation costs vary according to individual circumstances and the requirement of the water undertaker concerned; typical charges for internal installation are in the range £30 to £60; and for external installation in the range £80 to £150. Some water undertakers charge for a post-installation check where the meter has been fitted privately.
