asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to what factors he attributes the fall in output in the United Kingdom textile industry in the 12 months ended the first quarter of 1983.

The major factors which affected the fall in output in the textile industry (and indeed in manufacturing industry generally) in the period in question were the lower levels of world economic activity and a decline in the industry 's share of domestic and overseas markets.
