HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc699-700W
Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to the value and number of orders received by railway workshops from non-United Kingdom sources in each of the last three years; and if he has any information about the value of orders received by railway workshops of other EC states from non-domestic sources over a similar period.

Mr. David Mitchell

Information is not readily available in precisely the form requested. Overseas sales by British Rail Engineering were as follows:

1980 1981 1982
Number of Orders 4 4 3
Total Value (£ million outturn prices) 34.1 18.6 2.9

BRE has at present £56 million worth of overseas orders for delivery in 1983 or later.

Similar information is not available for other EC countries. I understand that in general their national railways do not undertake rolling stock construction.
