HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc665-6W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether exemption provision is available from National Health Service charges for former United Kingdom citizens who have previously carried out military service for their country and who are now domiciled abroad.

Mr. John Patten

Previous military service does not generally confer exemption from the statutory National Health Service hospital charges to overseas visitors, and neither does, previous United Kingdom citizenship. However, a United Kingdom war disability pensioner would be fully exempt.

An overseas visitor drawing a United Kingdom retirement or other United Kingdom state pension who has had 10 years continuous service as a crown servant (including service in Her Majesty's forces) would be exempt if the need for treatment arose during the visit.
