HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 cc727-8W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action was agreed to be taken when he raised the issue of the United States Supreme Court decision in the matter of the Container Corporation of America at the European Community Finance Ministers' Council on 11 July.

Mr. Ridley

[pursuant to his reply, 27 July 1983, c. 454]: My right hon. Friend the Chancellor gave Community Finance Ministers an assessment of the current situation on unitary taxation following the United States Supreme Court decision. He informed them of the letter he was sending to the Secretary to the United States Treasury on 12 July pressing for legislation to prohibit the application by individual states of the worldwide combined unitary method of taxation and suggested that they might wish too consider similar action. At the suggestion of the Presidency the text of that letter will be circulated to the other Community Governments.
