§ Mr. Roger Kingasked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps have been taken to improve safety for coach travellers throughout the European Community, in the light of recent coach accidents on the continent.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe primary responsibility for coach safety in Europe rests with the national Governments concerned. When I saw the European Commissioner for Transport last week, I stressed the importance of ensuring that EC regulations affecting coach safety were properly enforced by other member states and asked him to consider whether more could be done at the Community level. I also 703W attach importance to the work on construction standards for coaches being carried out by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva. I hope that the efforts we are making in the United Kingdom to improve coach safety will be taken up throughout Europe.
