HC Deb 29 July 1983 vol 46 c730W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many units of blood have been supplied to private hospitals by National Health Service hospitals in Scotland since May 1959.

Mr. John MacKay

This information is not available centrally. It is understood that all private hospitals in Scotland requiring blood now look to regional transfusion centres for supplies.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if a blood group and antibody screen is carried out by the blood transfusion service before blood is supplied to National Health Service and other hospitals in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

Yes.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if blood crossmatching is carried out by the blood transfusion service before blood is supplied to National Health Service and other hospitals in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

Crossmatching of blood is carried out before blood is administered to a patient. Whether this crossmatching is undertaken by the blood transfusion service or the hospital in which the patient is receiving treatment depends on local circumstances.
