HC Deb 28 July 1983 vol 46 c546W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the total value of aid sent from the United Kingdom to the famine area in the Horn of Africa during the past year; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Raison

About £3.3 million, including the cost of 19,000 tonnes of food aid to Ethiopia provided from our contribution to the world food programme. The European Community has also delivered, or allocated, to Ethiopia food aid worth about £8 million, of which about a fifth is met from the aid programme.

In addition, although Somalia is not afflicted by famine, we gave £529,000 last financial year to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and to British voluntary agencies for the support of refugees in that country, and the European Community last year provided food aid worth just over £9 million for the same purpose.
