§ Mr. Buchanan-Smith8,500 disputed gas meters, out of more than 15 million in circulation, were tested in the financial year 1982–83. Of these 54.27 per cent.—4,613 —were found to be outside the permitted tolerances of + or -2 per cent. The cost of bringing these meters in for the test and testing them, borne by the British Gas Corporation, was some £70,000.
