HL Deb 27 July 1983 vol 443 cc1607-8WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the practice regarding visits at Wandsworth prison, and why this differs from the practice at other long term prisons.

Lord Elton

Prisoners at Wandsworth Prison who have served less than 12 months receive one visit every four weeks. Prisoners who have served 12 months or more, and in certain circumstances those who have been transferred from other establishments, may receive two visits every four weeks. Extra visits under Prison Rule 34(3) are granted where this is thought necessary for the welfare of an individual prisoner or his family. Shortage of resources prevents the granting of more frequent visits.
