HL Deb 27 July 1983 vol 443 c1608WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the system of remuneration of doctors who treat patients who are prisoners in police custody, and how this compares with the remuneration of prison medical officers.

Lord Elton

Police surgeons examining prisoners held in police custody on behalf of the prison service are remunerated in the same way and at the same level as when examining other persons for the police. They are paid either a sessional fee or for each individual examination as appropriate.

Prison medical officers, whether full or part-time, are salaried employees. Part-timers are paid the appropriate proportion of the full-time salary plus an on-call fee.
